The Association for Historical Dialogue and Research POST Research Institute (POST RI) POST RI believes that contributing to peace education should be one of their primary goals. To this end, since 2004 POST RI (with the financial aid of UNOPS, UNDP-ACT and USAID) has conducted two projects, namely, "Education for Peace I" and "Education for Peace II". Moreover, POST RI is currently working with Cyprus College in the undertaking of the project “Exploring Europe”. Due to the success of "Education for Peace I & II", which has initiated reformations to the education system in the North of Cyprus, POST RI is keen to continue its work by undertaking a further project ("Education for Peace III"). "Education for Peace III" will primarily focus on the development of a dialogue between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot teachers, educators, local NGO's and relevant authorities, in order to work towards further reformations of the school education system. The Association for Historical Dialogue and Research Teaching and learning History in Cyprus: What are students’ perceptions on teaching and learning History in Cyprus Secondary education? by V. Germanou The research question of this study which is, “What are students’ perceptions of teaching and learning History at the secondary educational level in Cyprus?” will be addressed in the form of a questionnaire survey that will elicit students’ attitudes towards History. Moreover, supplementary interviews with History teachers will be employed in order to provide an additional perspective for the results. To obtain an insight into students’ perception of History at secondary level in Cyprus, it was decided to use a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods in order to have both breadth and depth in the study. Due to organisational constraints there is a greater emphasis on quantitative research. The findings are based on pupil questionnaire responses and interviews with History teachers. It has also been unique in exploring the students’ attitudes on History because in Cyprus there is a lack of research in the particular field of History. |
