| Article in the Financial Times about the Home for Coperation |
"The Association for Historical Dialogue and Research, a bi-communal group led by educators and historians, is already addressing the issue of teacher-training through seminars. Its latest project aims at bolstering co-operation on sensitive issues by establishing an educational centre in the "Dead Zone", the buffer area of derelict buildings in central Nicosia that separates the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sections of the capital." |

| 'Children as Social Researchers; a Resource Book for Teachers and Other Educators' |
| http://www.csca.org.cy/cru |
| Why do I consider this book an example of breakthrough scholarship?
by Dr Stavroula Philippou Firstly, it is a book about research methodology encompassing a range of topics and issues in doing social research. There is a variety of chapters addressing different topics such as research design, approaches to research methodology, research ethics, doing field research, report writing and disseminating research findings, collecting and analysing quantitative and qualitative data, social research and children. The scope of the book is therefore an achievement, as it manages to cover almost all the needs of a novice researcher or a teacher who would like to teach social research methods to children...more |

| White Paper on Intercultural Dialogue:"Living Together As Equals in Dignity"
Launched by the Council of Europe Ministers of Foreign Affairs
at their 118th Ministerial Session (Strasbourg, 7 May 2008) |
| The "White Paper on Intercultural Dialogue" , emphatically argues in the name of the governments of the 47 member states of the Council of Europe that our common future depends on our ability to safeguard and develop human rights, as enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights, democracy and the rule of law and to promote mutual understanding. It reasons that the intercultural approach offers a forward-looking model for managing cultural diversity. It proposes a conception based on individual human dignity (embracing our common humanity and common destiny). If there is a European identity to be realised, it will be based on shared fundamental values, respect for common heritage and cultural diversity as well as respect for the equal dignity of every individual. The White Paper is built on the solid foundations of the Council of Europe acquis. It takes account of the rich material from consultations with many stakeholders – including partners from regions outside Europe – held in 2007. In that sense, it is in many ways a product of the democratic deliberation which is at the heart of intercultural dialogue itself. read the paper |

This book and CD-Rom have been produced as a practical guide for those who are beginners in the field of teacher education – though experienced teacher trainers may find it interesting and useful, too. The book covers four main aspects of a teacher trainer's work: the professional identity and the roles and tasks of the trainer; preparing for training events (including analysis of training needs); running training courses (with emphasis on facilitation and managing discussions); assessment and evaluation of training. The CD-Rom which accompanies the book is a very practical complement with over 60 worksheets which can be used as activities in training courses. In addition there are PowerPoint presentations which can be used and adapted by the teacher trainer, together with background articles and bibliographies. Author(s) : |

| Living in Democracy - Lesson plans for lower secondary level (EDC/HRE Volume III) This is a manual for teachers in Education for Democratic Citizenship (EDC) and Human Rights Education (HRE), EDC/HRE textbook editors and curriculum developers. Nine teaching units of approximately four lessons each focus on key concepts of EDC/HRE. The lesson plans give step-by-step instructions and include student handouts and background information for teachers. In this way, the manual is suited for trainees or beginners in the teaching profession and teachers who are receiving in-service teacher training in EDC/HRE. Experienced teachers may draw on the ideas and materials. The complete manual provides a full school year's curriculum for lower secondary classes, but as each unit is also complete in itself, the manual allows great flexibility in use. The objective of EDC/HRE is the active citizen who is willing and able to participate in the democratic community. Therefore EDC/HRE strongly emphasise action and task-based learning. The school community is conceived as a sphere of authentic experience where young people can learn how to participate in democratic decision making and may take responsibility at an early age. Key concepts of EDC/HRE are taught as tools of life-long learning. ----------------------------------- ISBN : 978-92-871-6332-5 Format :A4 / 208 pages Price : 15 EUR in Europe / 23 US$ outside Europe (+ 10 % postage charges ) Available from Council of Europe Publishing Palais de l'Europe, 67075 Strasbourg Cedex, France E-mail : publishing@coe.int Visit our site / Visitez notre site : http://book.coe.int Tel. : +33 (0)3 88 41 25 81 Fax : +33 (0)3 88 41 39 10 To place an order directly : http://book.coe.int/sysmodules/RBS_page/admin/redirect.php?id=36&lang=EN&produit_aliasid=2306 -- Council of Europe Publishing © Palais de l'Europe, 67075 Strasbourg Cedex, France, http://book.coe.int, Email : publishing@coe.int |

| Many language teachers, teacher educators and second language acquisition researchers have expressed the conviction that the primary aim of foreign language teaching is to enable learners to communicate with people from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds in an increasingly multicultural world. The aim of this publication is to assist teacher educators and language teachers in shifting the focus from linguistic competence to intercultural communicative competence. The printed booklet of the present guide contains the introductions to: • definitions of key terms in intercultural communication; • planning and designing intercultural communication courses and workshops; • teaching/training methods and materials; • assessing intercultural communicative competence. The materials on the accompanying CD-Rom include: • the theoretical background to teaching language and culture; • detailed workshop and course planning guidelines; • teaching materials and activities based on literature, films and songs; • guidelines and tasks for assessment and descriptors of competences; • intercultural communication workshop reports; • our research articles about the intercultural dimension of FIT. All of the materials in this publication are based on our research and the lessons we learnt from the training sessions we held in 12 European countries within the framework of the ICCinTE project of the ECML between 2004 and 2006. This guide can be used independently or it can complement our intercultural communication textbook Mirrors and windows in order to help incorporate intercultural communication training into foreign language teaching and teacher education more systematically. ----------------------------------- ISBN : 978-92-871-6225-0 Format :16 x 24 / 43 pages Price : 15 EUR in Europe / 25 US$ outside Europe (+ 10 % postage charges ) Available from Council of Europe Publishing Palais de l'Europe, 67075 Strasbourg Cedex, France E-mail : publishing@coe.int Visit our site / Visitez notre site : http://book.coe.int Tel. : +33 (0)3 88 41 25 81 Fax : +33 (0)3 88 41 39 10 To place an order directly : http://book.coe.int/sysmodules/RBS_page/admin/redirect.php?id=36&lang=EN&produit_aliasid=2275 |
| University of Cambridge Course for History Teachers |
Dear All,
The University of Cambridge Faculty of Education presents a new 30-hour course for secondary history teachers: “Shaping progression in the Secondary History Curriculum: Defining and Developing Historical Thinking”.
Although the course is based on the British 2008 National Curriculum, it is also relevant to history teachers from Europe and other parts of the world and international input is highly appreciated. The course will be taught through structured pre-reading (all reading materials supplied), a Friday pm/Saturday conference (8-9 February, including dinner on Friday), a Saturday-only conference (12 April) and a school-based innovation and research task, supported by web-based materials and e-conferencing, resulting in a 2,000 word assignment. The costs will be £450.00 payable prior to commencement of the course. This includes cost of dinner on Friday 8th February, lunch on both Saturdays and all refreshments. The primary aim of this course will be to help participants create links between five areas: history education research, historical research, the intellectual structure of the discipline of history, their own educational practice and their own continued research into that practice. Therefore this course is relevant for both recently qualified teachers and experienced ones and for both the head of history and the inspector: everyone has its own perspective and reference point and every point of view can enrich someone else. An application form can be found on the website: http://www.educ.cam.ac.uk/ptpd/cfps. However, there is only room for 60 applicants. Kind regards, Clio Stronk
