On 9 may 2007, The EUROCLIO Board sent out an official statement on the
topic of insufficient teachers leave opportunities in many European
countries. The Statement was sent to various international teacher and
principal organisations, international bodies as the EU and the Council of
Europe, and national ministries of education in Europe. The statement calls
upon national authorities and school principles to provide more
possibilities for history teachers to travel abroad to receive professional
training and participate in conferences. Providing teachers with such
opportunities give them the chance to learn in a intercultural setting,
which enriches the quality of teaching and of education in general.

Putting out the statement was agreed upon during the EUROCLIO Annual
Conference and Professional Training Development Course around the theme
'Human rights education: lessons from history'. During this successful
conference, that took place 20 to 25 March 2007 in Bled (Slovenia), many
participants expressed their concern about the difficulties it takes to
receive leave and funding for international training opportunities like
these.
